C. ANTHONY MUSE

POLITICAL RECORD

A CLOSER LOOK…

EDUCATION

Muse has championed the continual investment in our children and their education, making higher education and skills training a priority. Muse is committed to improving Prince George’s County schools. In 1997 Muse authored legislation that implemented school uniforms for public school students. He also sponsored legislation and chaired a task force to study financial literacy in public schools, resulting in its limited use in the current curriculum. He continues to fight for and propose legislation (SB33) to restore an all-elected school board.

Senate Bill 139
This legislation would have “prohibited” the State Board of Education from including the passing of statewide, mandatory, curriculum-based examinations or assessments in its requirements for graduation from a public high school in the state.

ECONOMY

Building a stronger economy for county residents is important to Muse. He has been an advocate for working families and continues to support legislation to promote and support their prosperity and wellbeing. In 2014, as Senator, Muse co-sponsored legislation to raise the minimum wage (SB331). In 2018, as Senator, Muse voted to override Governor Hogan’s veto of the Healthy Working Families Act allowing workers in Maryland to earn paid sick leave.

CRIME AND PUBLIC SAFETY

Muse has fought for the rights of Maryland residents including the right to due process of law. In 2014, he sponsored legislation (SB651) to decriminalize crimes that are no longer considered crimes, and in 2015 Senator Muse co-sponsored legislation (SB526) which “shielded” certain criminal offenses from the public, thereby allowing those who have served their sentences an opportunity to re-engage and participate in the workforce.

In 2016, he sponsored legislation to protect residents impacted by domestic violence; and he currently serves as chair of The NeShante and Chloe Davis Domestic Violence Prevention Task Force.

HEALTHCARE

Every resident of the state of Maryland deserves access to good healthcare. Currently, many fear losing coverage and affordable care. In 2011 Muse sponsored a bill to provide funds for single mothers living with HIV and AIDS to have access to educational and other supportive services. In 2013, Muse sponsored Senate Bill 380, requiring the study of the environmental causes of cancer.

VETERANS

Veterans have sacrificed much to protect and defend our freedoms and Muse has been a strong advocate for them. He championed legislation to support veterans in their retirement by providing a subtraction modification for certain military retirement income of individuals who are at least 65 years of age.
